Tips Teach Children Empathetic and Tolerance
Talking together about tolerance and give examples of behavior will help children appreciate the meaning of the difference. Give opportunities for children to play and work together with other friends.
Children usually learn from what they have been seen and heard from parents and the people around them. Behavior of parents who respect others will emulate their children, because parents often show tolerance attitude every day will have a considerable influence on the children so they will be more appreciative of differences, too.
Here are some of tips teaching children to be tolerance and empathic as quoted from Kidshealth, Thursday (3/9/2009):
- For parents who want to teach their children tolerance must show respect for other people before them.
- Be careful with the language used. Children always learn from what they have been heard, to be careful in talking with different people. Do not make jokes that offend a difference, although the sounds funny but the child could follow.
- Selective in choosing books, toys, music, art and video. Keep the child’s mind that all people should be treated the same, no different.
- Answer all kinds of children questions about differences honestly and with respect.
- Begin to appreciate all kinds of differences from their own family members. Show children how to appreciate a difference in ability, interest and style.
- Inform children that tolerance does not mean respect for bad behavior. Children should be told what kind of behavior should be rewarded and that does not need to be respected.
- Teach your child about feelings accepted, respected and valued. Because the children feel bad they will treat people badly too, while children who have a body defense and a strong sense of respect will treat people with respect, too.
- Give children an opportunity to play and learn with a population of different, so the feeling of tolerance that would present itself.
The important things to teach the children to be tolerance are treated like a child would be treated.The children will be more empathic to others.
